ASUS ZenFone 5 (2018) review: 6.2-inch smartphone with Notch and Snapdragon 636

At the end of February, at the MWC 2018, the official announcement of several new mobile devices from ASUS took place. These are three smartphones of the Zenfone 5 family (Zenfone 5Z, Zenfone 5, Zenfone 5 Lite) and the Zenfone Max (M1) – an updated and smaller version of the Zenfone Max Plus (M1) model.

In today’s review, we will assess the main specifications of the new Taiwanese model ASUS Zenfone 5. The novelty received a cutout on the screen in the style of the iPhone X and advanced technical equipment.

Trends of the last year are an increase in the number of cameras, wide displays with rounded corners, and a notch in the upper part. All this is in the new smartphone ASUS ZenFone 5 ZE620KL.

ASUS ZenFone 5: Design

The novelty looks like an iPhone X, and this is achieved due to the presence of a cutout at the top of the screen and the vertical orientation of the dual camera. In addition to all the corners of the screen are essentially rounded, which makes the experimental one even more like the iPhone X.

The frame of the case is made of metal, and the front and back panels are made of glass. The build quality is high, so when trying to twist the body almost does not lend itself. When tapping the body, the physical keys do not rattle.

Most of the front surface is a large 6.2-inch screen, which is covered with a protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass. The side frames on all sides are thin enough, so overall the device turned out to be compact. They are quite comfortable to use one hand, the main thing is not to forget that sometimes devices with such materials of the shell are slippery.

Front in the recess above the display is installed a sensor array, a front camera, and a conversational speaker, under the decorative grille which also hides the LED indicator of activity and status.

The back is covered with glass, under which a corporate pattern in the form of concentric circles is visible. In the upper left corner, there is a double main rear camera, where both sensors are combined into a separate unit, which protrudes slightly above the common surface. Below the camera is an LED flash. A further down the center is the fingerprint sensor, which can be used to control the curtain of notifications.

To the left is a hybrid tray for installing a pair of SIM cards in nanoSIM format, one of which can be replaced with a microSD format carrier. On the right, only the volume and lock control keys are visible.

A microphone is placed on top. From the bottom are another microphone, a system speaker, a standard audio jack mini-jack, and a USB Type-C connector.

Dimensions ASUS ZenFone 5 is a length of 153.0 mm, a width of 75.6 mm and a thickness of 7.8 mm. The weight of the phone is 155 grams. At the moment, you can buy the device in two colors: black and silver.

ASUS ZenFone 5: Display

The ASUS ZenFone 5 uses a 6.2 inch IPS screen with an aspect ratio of 19: 9 and a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The screen occupies 90% of the area of the front panel, from scratches the display is covered with Gorilla Glass with an excellent oleophobic coating.

The aspect ratio is a bit out of the ordinary, even taking into account the traction of all manufacturers to the elongated screens, but all programs are correctly displayed. Problems can only be due to the essentially rounded corners, which often contain the service information of various programs. In many applications, landscape orientation does not use the screen area on the sides of the Notch.  Apparently, in Android P this feature will be taken into account.

At the maximum power of the backlight, the brightness of the white field is 435.42 cd/m2, which is much less than 567.63 cd/m2 for ASUS ZenFone 4. But despite this, it is convenient to work with the display even if direct sunlight falls on it. Moreover, even under severe conditions with bright light sources, the display does not fade. The measured contrast is rather high – 1122: 1.

In the end, we can say that ZenFone 5 has a good screen, it does not set records, but on a combination of characteristics is at a level – above average.

ASUS ZenFone 5: Performance

The smartphone is based on the 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor. This SoC is made using the 14 nm process technology FinFET. All Kryo 260 SoC cores operate at a frequency of up to 1.8 GHz. The video subsystem is based on the Adreno 509. It helps the processor 4 GB of RAM such as LPDDR4X and 64 GB of storage, which can be expanded with a CD-card up to 2TB.

Thanks to the Snapdragon 636 chip, where the Cortex-A53 medium-core cores have been replaced by the more efficient Kryo 260, the ZenFone 5 runs significantly faster than most mid-high-end devices. This is not the level of the current flagships, but the smartphone is taking another step in their direction.

ASUS ZenFone 5: Camera

The ASUS ZenFone 5 has 3 cameras – a pair of rear (conventional with optical stabilization and wide-angle with a 120-degree coverage angle), and one front camera.

The main camera is based on a 12-megapixel sensor Sony ExmorRS IMX363 measuring 1/2.5 inches. This is the latest development of Sony, which is used only in a pair of smartphones, namely in Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s and in ASUS ZenFone 5. It is noteworthy that both smartphones have aperture f/1.8.

Traditionally, the background blur function is provided. It works much better than in ASUS ZenFone 4, which in this respect was also good, or rather one of the best. Blurs only the background and nothing more, undeveloped areas do not remain, and the blur in the novelty now looks like a side, which so far could not show any of the smartphones we examined.

The flash is based on a pair of LEDs with different color temperatures. When measuring at a distance of 1 meter, a level of 22.6 lux was recorded.

At first glance, the characteristics of the front camera are quite ordinary – a resolution of 8 megapixels and a lens aperture of f/2.0. But it removes the camera very adequately, both with natural light on the street and with a weak artificial in the room.

ASUS ZenFone 5: Sound

In the promotional materials, the producer focused on sound. Declared to increase the size of the speakers by 36%, increase the volume of the main dynamics by 46%, and conversational – by 27%. It should be noted that not a full pair of stereo speakers is installed, but the main one (system) and additional (colloquial), which in the process of playback, in fact, is only an auxiliary one. It does reproduce the left channel, but its frequency range is narrow, and the volume is lower than that of the main system speaker. However, there is no imbalance in the channels.

But, in general, there is a sense of stereo, and the sound quality is very decent.

ASUS ZenFone 5: Battery

The smartphone is equipped with a non-removable, lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 3300 mAh.

It supports quick charging, but Qualcomm Quick Charge needs to be purchased separately.

Coupled with SoC, made on a 14-nm process technology, the smartphone is working relatively long. ZenFone 5 easily survived the day in normal mode with frequent use of the camera and navigation and watching videos up to 4 hours. With less load, the phone works confidently from 1 to 2 days.
