Vivo X23 review: 6.41-inch mid-range smartphone with in-display fingerprint sensor

The company Vivo officially introduced a new smartphone Vivo X23. The novelty received a large 6.41-inch Super AMOLED screen with a very small cutout at the top under the front camera and a fingerprint scanner built into the display.

Today every second smartphone comes out with Notch at the top of the screen – this is the new fashion that Apple brought last year with the iPhone X.  But it’s bad luck when watching a movie 5 percent of the screen is taken by a black bar. Therefore, some manufacturers are trying to produce more user-friendly products.

Among these, it is worth noting the novelty – Vivo X23. Here the company realized a lot of new technologies and showed a really cool product. Today in the review, we will tell you why it is worth paying attention to this phone.

 Vivo X23: Design

The appearance of the smartphone immediately interested me, as the manufacturer showed an unusual solution. Almost the entire front surface of the phone takes a large 6.4-inch screen (about 92%) without any cuts in the top. There’s just a front camera inserted so we can do Selfie, and the rest of the area is occupied by a screen. The frames around the screen are so thin that it seems that the entire front surface of the smartphone is a solid display.

On the back of the phone, in the upper left corner, is the main dual camera (the sensors are located vertically). Underneath it, we see an LED flash and just below the company logo, nothing more. Separately, it is worth praising the developers for a very stylish version of the case, where colorful stripes are painted on the back panel – it looks very cool.

Today in the review, we will tell you why it is worth paying attention to this phone.X23 is made of metal, the back cover is covered with impact-resistant tempered glass. At the moment, the Vivo X23 is presented in three colors – red, blue and violet with overflow. To our taste, the most attractive was the second option, but someone, it is likely, like even a third.

The dimensions of the Vivo X23 are length 157.7 mm, width 74.1 mm and thickness of only 7.5 mm. The weight of the device is -160.5 g.

The new Vivo X23 is a smartphone with no frills. The only three mechanical buttons (volume and power controls) are located on the right side edge, the SIM card tray and MicroSD on the left, the USB Type-C socket on the bottom. In the thin case, there was even a place for a 3.5 mm jack for headphones.

Vivo X23: Display

The Vivo X23 smartphone features a large 6.41-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 (Wide Full HD+) and a 9: 19.5 aspect ratio. Like the top models, the Super AMOLED matrix is used here, not the cheaper IPS. Due to the very thin frames and a very small drop-shaped cutout for the camera, the phone screen occupies 92% of the front surface.
Great screen for games, reading books and everything in that spirit, and the brightness is also quite good.

The main feature of the smartphone is the fingerprint scanner, which is located on the display. You simply click on the center of the display and the scanner reads your data. No additional scanners on the back panel, which constantly miss.

It should be noted that the Vivo X23 is not the first smartphone with a fingerprint scanner integrated into the screen. Not long ago the company was already released by Vivo NEX, which has a similar chip, Oppo R17 is also on the market. Interestingly, none of these devices is a flagship.

Vivo X23: Performance

Vivo X23 is a mid-range smartphone, so the manufacturer decided not to use the flagship processor. Here was installed a new mid-level processor Snapdragon 670 from Qualcomm.

The chip is manufactured according to the standards of 10-nanometer process and contains 8 computational 64-bit Qualcomm Kryo 360 cores with a maximum operating frequency of 2.0 GHz.

The integrated graphics accelerator Adreno 615 provides very good speed in 3D-graphics.

Despite not the top-end processor, the new Vivo X23 got as much RAM as there is not every flagship – as much as 8 Gb LPDDR4x @ 1866 MHz. The capacity of the built-in flash drive is 128 GB, using fast chips UFS 2.1. The filling is very decent, for a middle-class product and you cannot think of anything better.

Vivo X23 has repeatedly glowed in the popular benchmark GeekBench, where it gains about 1700 points in a single-core mode and 5900 – in a multi-core. Very, very good result, especially considering that inside is not the most top-end processor.

If you compare the performance of Vivo X23 with real flagships, then it is much faster than Samsung Galaxy S7 based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 and just a little below the level of Galaxy S8 based on Snapdragon 835. If you do not take into account the most demanding games, the power of new items Vivo will suffice more than.

Vivo X23: Camera

Vivo X23 received a very good dual main camera. The first (main) module is based on a 12 megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor with Dual Pixel technology and is equipped with a “portrait” lens with f/1.8 aperture. The second module has a resolution of 13.0 MP and wide-angle optics with a coverage of 125 degrees and aperture f/2.4.

The tests carried out showed that it removes more than adequately, almost like the upper models. In any case, I’m glad that the additional sensor was delivered not only for general appearance and the effect  Bokeh for the sake of. The front camera has a resolution of 12 megapixels and aperture  f/2.0.

Vivo X23: Software

Vivo X23 is running Android 8.1 Oreo with the proprietary shell FunTouch OS 4.5. Until the end of the year, the company’s representatives promise to release an update to the Android 9.0 Pie, announced in early September, which should “fly through the air” via OTA.

It is also worth noting that the FunTouch OS supports two technologies that are designed to increase the responsiveness of the interface in the OS itself and in games. They are called, respectively, System Turbo and Game Turbo. Also, the “program” list includes a voice assistant.

The integrated X12 LTE modem of the Snapdragon 670 chipset supports 4G LTE Category-12 DL / Category-13 UL networks, allowing the Vivo X23 to download data at speeds up to 600 Mbps and transmit at speeds up to 150 Mbps. Slots for SIM-cards – two, format Nano-SIM.

The maximum data transfer rate in WiFi networks is 867 Mbps (IEEE 802.11 a / b/g/n/ac). The version of Bluetooth is the fifth. The port of the out-of-date format micro USB 2.0, used to charge and synchronize data with the PC, only spoils the picture, although the chipset supports USB 3.1.
